Q&A: Drew Leventhal — Yosh

01.12.19

Have you recently been living by any life philosophy? I have been trying to be kind and listen more intently. What will baffle future generations about our day and age? Why we did not do more about climate change before it was too late. Are you aware of any conspiracies? Not a big conspiracy guy but one I always liked was Umbrella Man from the JFK assassination. It’s been debunked though. What is it that interests you about photography? The world looks better through the ground glass than it does in real life. What is the worst thing about city life? If you are not doing something every moment, you feel useless. What part of the planet would you like to explore? I would love to explore a big desert, either the Sahara or the Atacama. What do you think is the most plausible of the supernatural? I think there is such a thing as magic. Some things are just indescribable. Pick a field of science to be an expert within. Computer Science. Choose a job you would be willing to do for free on the side. Party planning. Describe the most important photo you’ve seen. Alec Soth’s Joshua, Angola State Prison. Louisiana, USA. 2002. It taught me that straight photography can be so narrative and beautiful. How often do you take other people’s advice? I’m a little stubborn so rarely in the beginning, but I often come around. Describe a personal hell. A room with people continuously coughing and sneezing. On what occasion do you lie? I lie to myself about who I am. What is the best way to educate yourself? Read books. What is the next book you want to read? Inherent Vice Ultimate camera? I would love a big 8×10 camera, either an Ebony or a Deardorff. Most used camera? My Wista 45 field camera. What object do you want? A copy of Cristina De Middel’s Afronauts. What object do you need?
I am thankful there is nothing I am particularly in need of. How would you explain the internet to someone from the 1950’s? Instant information and communication, anytime, anywhere. Are you satisfied with your level of physical strength? Been doing Krav Maga for the last few months so feeling pretty good. Describe a cheap thrill. Biking at full speed down a long hill. Are impulses more important than consequences? Yes, as long as you are aware and comfortable with the consequences. Which talent would you most like to have? I want to be able to play a musical instrument. What is your plan for the next 24 hours? Post-Thanksgiving here so I’m doing some work and then headed home to Brooklyn tomorrow.
