Mack First Book Award 2019

The Mack First Book Award is now open for submissions and for the first time since the award was founded in 2012, will not be limited to nominated projects but open to all photographers who have not previously been published by a third party. This does not include self-published books or print-on-demand projects through online software platforms.

As in 2018, the award involves both publication of the winner by MACK and a solo exhibition at Photo London 2019. The confirmed judges are Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, Sarah Allen, Emma Bowkett, Michael Mack and Polly Fleury.

Submissions must consist of coherent book projects and not portfolios of images in book form. Any text within the book must be supplied with an English translation.

All submissions must be received as paper book dummies. Digital submissions in the form of PDFs, ebooks or apps will not be considered.

Submissions must be received between 12 November 2018 – 21 January 2019. Submissions received before or after these dates will not be considered for the prize.

Please include your current email address, contact details and return address as part of your submission.

Book dummies will not be returned unless packaging and full postage is included. Neither MACK nor any of the sponsors will be held responsible for loss or damage to books submitted.

A panel of judges including Michael Mack and Polly Fleury from the Wilson Centre for Photography, as well as guest judges Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa and Sarah Allen, will together assess all submitted dummies, shortlisting ten. From the shortlist, a single project will be chosen as the winner to be published by MACK.

The winning project will be announced at the opening of Photo London at Somerset House, London, in May 2019 and the book will be published in time for that announcement.

The winning artist will also have a solo exhibition of their work at Photo London 2019 to coincide with the award announcement.
