Have you recently been living by any life philosophy? Enjoy the process and try to live in the moment. What will baffle future generations about our day and age?That people are still fighting (and dying) to be seen as equals. Are you aware of any conspiracies? Way too many. What is it that interests you about photography? I think what interests me about photography is the mindfulness that it brings. You sort of become hyperaware of who and what is around you. It’s a great medium that can be used to connect with the world. What is the worst thing about city life? Too crowded. Too expensive. Very overrated. What part of the planet would you like to explore? Maybe the ocean. The deep sea scares me. What do you think is the most plausible of the supernatural? Probably all of it honestly. I think there is a strong case to be made that sea monsters actually do exist. If you had to align yourself with a leader in history, who would it be? Nelson Mandela or Patrick Vieira. Pick a field of science to be an expert within. Astronomy! What moment have you most wished you’d had a camera when you hadn’t? Just this past week actually. I was driving to work and saw a person relaxing under a tree. Such a great opportunity to make a portrait. Everything was perfect, except I didn’t have my camera. (This happens to me a lot). Choose a job you would be willing to do for free on the side. Teach. Describe the most important photo you’ve seen. My mother owned a photo book of images that were featured in the Los Angeles Times through the years. I used to look at this book a lot as a kid. In the book there is a photo from the 1920’s of an injured solider who is heavily bandaged trying to eat through a straw. I think it’s the first photograph that I saw that effected me deeply.
How often do you take other people’s advice? Not often enough unfortunately. Describe a personal hell. Having to take the New York State Mathematics regents. That or getting chased by birds. Which living person do you most admire? My mom. She’s a very strong woman. On what occasion do you lie? I try not to. What was the last crime you witnessed? Public drinking? Not sure if that’s a crime. What is the best way to educate yourself? Read, ask questions, surround yourself with people that inspire you, don’t be afraid to fail. What is the next book you want to read? In Search of Small Gods by Jim Harrison, Conversations 2 by Remi Coignet, Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison, The Complete Essays 1973-1991 by Luigi Ghirri, and X-Men Gold #13. Ultimate camera? Mamiya 7. I really enjoyed shooting with that camera. Most used camera? Mamiya RB67. What object do you want? Not sure. What object do you need? Probably a new car. How would you explain the internet to someone from the 1950’s? A wonderful place at times. A terrible place most other times. Are you satisfied with your level of physical strength? I guess so. Never thought about it really. Describe a cheap thrill. Sitting deep in the woods by yourself. Pick an historic moment from the last hundred years to bring a camera to. This is a weird answer (And I think I’m off by a few years) but the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Are impulses more important than consequences? Consequences should always be heavily considered. Which talent would you most like to have? I wish I could build anything I needed. Like an all around craftsperson. What is your plan for the next 24 hours? Do some work around the house.
