Q&A: Uri Korn


Have you recently been living by any life philosophy? Blessed are the flexible. What will baffle future generations about our day and age? Intellectual property, illegible graffiti, and the Electoral College. Are you aware of any conspiracies? Yes, but I don’t subscribe to them automatically. But I do like to research the way mass media manipulates culture into a form of voluntary propaganda that people seem to willingly consume. Many subjects such as JFK’s killing have so much unfinished business that it has to be on purpose in some way. What is it that interests you about photography? Seeing through someone else’s eyes. What is the worst thing about city life? I live in a very rural area now since I left the city of Oakland a few years ago because it exhausts me to be around too many people. The increase of population in the Bay Area is off the charts. There are many reasons but primarily I don’t think people are easily able to have comfort zones in a city. What part of the planet would you like to explore? The Ocean. And on land, a partial wish list includes Madagascar, Vietnam, Australia, Ireland, Peru, Poland & Egypt. What do you think is the most plausible of the supernatural? Synchronicity. If you had to align yourself with a leader in history, who would it be? The leader of the resistance.

Pick a field of science to be an expert within. Mycology. What moment have you most wished you’d had a camera when you hadn’t? Many. One that was funny though was a Double Rainbow Ice Cream Truck directly centered under a double rainbow that I saw on the highway while I was driving. My camera was in the back seat and I could not get to it in time and it passed… Choose a job you would be willing to do for free on the side. A Judge at the Cannabis Cup. Describe the most important photo you’ve seen. It blew my mind. How often do you take other people’s advice? I try to always take advice of any kind with a grain of salt. Everyone is so unique it is hard to find “truths” that are universal. But I listen more deeply to people I trust. Describe a personal hell. Waiting rooms. Also the Department of Motor Vehicles and dealing with my internet getting hooked up at my new place. Which living person do you most admire? Any survivor with a good attitude. On what occasion do you lie? When I play Liar’s Dice. But not always. What was the last crime you witnessed? An illegal smile. What is the best way to educate yourself? Experience through trial and error and doing your own research. What is the next book you want to read? The next Hamburger Eyes.

Ultimate camera? An instant camera that makes already processed negatives. Most used camera? The camera I shot more photos with then any other was probably my first which was a Nikkormat. Actually an old friend just offered me one that his dad had given to him. I broke my first one so I am pretty stoked to get another- I always loved the way the shutter sounded on that thing. What object do you want? Hot Tub. What object do you need? The object of my affection. How would you explain the internet to someone from the 1950’s? First of all I would have to explain time travel so I doubt they would believe me after that. Are you satisfied with your level of physical strength? Yes. Describe a cheap thrill. Free stuff I find. Pick an historic moment from the last hundred years to bring a camera to. The moon landing- I always wanted to take a portrait of Kubrick. Are impulses more important than consequences? Impulses have to happen before the other so I suppose that impulses are the most important. But lessons can’t be learned without consequences. Catch 22 really. Which talent would you most like to have? Good timing. What is your plan for the next 24 hours? I am getting a suit tomorrow for a wedding I am going to later this month and hopefully getting the internet to work at my new spot.
