Q&A: Brian Kanagaki



Have you recently been living by any life philosophy? Be nicer and more supportive to the people that are close to me. What will baffle future generations about our day and age? So much… Are you aware of any conspiracies? I want to believe. What is it that interests you about photography? I’ve never had anything else in my life that makes me so angry and hate it while at the same time making me love it. Thats gotta mean something. What is the worst thing about city life? Sometimes it just seems like everyone and everything is against you. What part of the planet would you like to explore? I love exploring new cities. What do you think is the most plausible of the supernatural? Aliens and time travel. You just don’t know. Pick a field of science to be an expert within. Physics. What moment have you most wished you’d had a camera when you hadn’t? I had a camera on month long US tour once and I lost it along with a few rolls of film. I just wish I had that time back.

Choose a job you would be willing to do for free on the side. Photography… Describe the most important photo you’ve seen. I didn’t study photography so I don’t have a great photographic vocabulary. I studied print making and design and didn’t get into photography until after I’d graduated. In college I remember seeing Russian Suprematist art and I think that inspired my aesthetic the most. Im always looking for circles and squares. However I Melancholic Tulip by André Kertész might be my favorite photograph. How often do you take other people’s advice? Probably not often enough. Describe a personal hell. When your coffee goes cold. Which living person do you most admire? My Parents. On what occasion do you lie? When someone calls me early in the morning and I pretend that I was already awake. What was the last crime you witnessed? What is the best way to educate yourself? Travel. Meet new people. Ultimate camera? Something with autofocus. Most used camera? Canon AE-1.

What object do you want? Porsche. What object do you need? Sunlight isn’t an object but thats something that I really need. How would you explain the internet to someone from the 1950’s? I can’t even really explain what it is now. Are you satisfied with your level of physical strength? Physical strength yes, mental strength no. Describe a cheap thrill. Donuts. Pick an historic moment from the last hundred years to bring a camera to. Moon landing. Are impulses more important than consequences? I am really not an impulsive person so I am going to say yes because I am a consequences guy. Which talent would you most like to have? I wish I could kick flip. What is your plan for the next 24 hours? Eat a bagel, go to work.
