This Friday Fry Up visits Chinese photographer Zhang Kechun’s series Between the Mountains and Water. Following on from the lauded work The Yellow River, the series once again focuses on a China wrestling with its ancient past and a rush to modernise, producing some baffling results. A milky haze of polluted skies and landscapes that seem to push on into a infinite void, the palette is interrupted by human artifacts monolithic in proportion, lurching out of the vacuum. The push and pull of nature and human intervention, with humans so dwarfed in the landscape creates an absurd sublime narrative.
