Q&A: Lark Foord

Have you recently been living by any life philosophy? Just bad habits. What will baffle future generations about our day and age? I’m sure they’ll be too busy cleaning up our mess to wonder why. Are you aware of any conspiracies? Megapixels. What is it that interests you about photography? Connecting with my environment. It’s the seeking and the seeing mainly, but it’s completely different when I walk around without a camera. What is the worst thing about city life? The noise. What part of the planet would you like to explore? I’ve never been to Japan. What do you think is the most plausible of the supernatural? Something like animism. Not just animals, but specifically plants, rocks, places that seem to be something more. If you had to align yourself with a leader in history, who would it be? I’m not usually interested in leaders. Putting aside good causes, I gravitate towards underdogs and outsiders. Pick a field of science to be an expert within. Robotics and/or Artificial Intelligence. Know thy enemy. What moment have you most wished you’d had a camera when you hadn’t? My subjects aren’t usually moving targets. More often than not it’s a distraction that spoils things for me. I’m not by myself and I know the conditions won’t be the same if I come back for the shot. It happens all the time.

Choose a job you would be willing to do for free on the side. Besides photography? Illustration. Describe the most important photo you’ve seen. The Falling Man. Even out of context, it just resonates. On the other hand, enthralling images have a way of eclipsing everything else, so whatever I’m looking at feels like the most important photo at that moment. How often do you take other people’s advice? Only when I ask for it first. Describe a personal hell. Waiting rooms and elevators. Kind of the same thing, only the elevator doesn’t usually get stuck on one floor. Which living person do you most admire? Werner Herzog is pretty cool. On what occasion do you lie? People frequently approach me when I’m taking pictures and ask what I’m doing. I was taking a picture of a random shadow against a wall and a security guard grabbed my arm and started yelling at me. He calmed down after I told him what I was doing, but he said I would have to explain it to his supervisor because it sounded ridiculous. It’s so much easier when I say bird photography. What was the last crime you witnessed? A man punched a women after she threw a soda at him. I think they were both drunk. What is the best way to educate yourself? I’ve learned a great deal from others, but mostly it’s making mistakes and chasing after obsessions.

What is the next book you want to read? I have a copy of Thinking, Fast and Slow which I’ve been putting off. The internet is very distracting. Ultimate camera? I should probably be carrying around medium format, but I’ve always wanted a Hexar AF. Most used camera? Probably split down the middle between an Oly mju II and a Nikon F100. What object do you want? A cruiser board. What object do you need? Earphones. How would you explain the internet to someone from the 1950’s? I think introducing emoji very early in this conversation would speed things up. Are you satisfied with your level of physical strength? Yes. Describe a cheap thrill. Going outside during a storm. Pick an historic moment from the last hundred years to bring a camera to. The moon landing. Are impulses more important than consequences? As long as no one else gets hurt. Which talent would you most like to have? The ability to stop time, or short of that better time management. What is your plan for the next 24 hours? I plan as little as possible. Whatever work that needs to get done, catch up on overdue sleep, hopefully time for a long walk or a bike ride, eat dinner with friends.
