Q&A: Daniel Kukla


What is your plan for the next 24 hours? Generate emails at the studio, meet friend for a run in Prospect Park, bike to Manhattan, ship exhibition prints, espresso, BBQ with old photo school friends, groceries, bike to Brooklyn, generate more emails, read short story book, sleepy time…. What part of the planet would you like to explore? I need to find a way to get to Indonesia and Madagascar. Where do you think the most dangerous place on Earth is? The center of Earth. Does the modern world impress you? Yes, impress and depress. I hope that we can start to implement our advances in technology in creating a more sustainable future.

In the event of a disaster, where would you go? Hawaii. Is disappointment healthy? Disappointment is one of the few things that are guaranteed in life.  I find it’s good to learn from it, but to not get too caught up and move on. When are you most aware you are aging? When I pay attention to real estate listings. Most used camera? My cell phone camera for quick observations and visual notes. What is the best way to educate yourself? Friends, reading, and traveling. Which living person do you most admire? Jane Goodall.

What do you think is the most plausible of the supernatural? Elvis? What is your nationality? American. What is it that interests you about photography? Lets my curiosity roam free. Name one smell that triggers an abstract memory.  Windex glass cleaner reminds me of a museum I worked in where I cleaned animal cages.
